A Swiss Explorer's Odyssey (1902 & 1905)

Embassy of Switzerland in India in collaboration with Museo Camera and Association of Familie Jules Jacot- Guillarmod presents A Swiss Explorer's Odyssey (1902 & 1905).

Jules Jacot Guillarmod was born on December 24, 1868 in La Chaux-de-Fonds. A great traveller, this doctor travelled the world: America, Asia, Europe, Africa. He died in 1925 aboard a liner in the Gulf of Aden off the coast of Yemen. An adventurer, Jules Jacot Guillarmod is also a pioneer of mountaineering. He owes his international fame to the first attempt to climb the legendary K2 in 1902.
Passionate about photography, he documented his travels and his daily life with more than 12,000 photos. The special feature of these shots is that they are in stereoscopy (in 3D or in relief), 4,500 of which are now digitized on the jacot-guillarmod.ch web platform. Following in the footsteps of Jules Jacot Guillarmod means discovering Switzerland and the world at the dawn of the 20th century; it means living an adventure novel in which each photo is a journey in itself.

These archives document his two major Himalayan expeditions, K2 in 1902 and Kangchenjunga in 1905. Notably, his mountaineering career began in 1889, and he became a member of the Club Alpin Français after summiting Mont Blanc in 1897. He joined the 1902 K2 expedition and later led a tragic attempt on Kangchenjunga in 1905, which ended in the deaths of several climbers. Despite setbacks, Jacot-Guillarmod’s contributions to photography, mountaineering, and exploration were vast, leaving behind a rich legacy of documentation from remote and often uncharted regions.
